Cycle Level: 2 (good for 3 as well)

My third grade class explored a variety of famous inventors to learn more about inventions.

The Complete Lesson

Introduction: (the “hook”)

I will ask students to sit in front of the red couch facing the Smartboard.

I will ask students to share an invention that they “couldn’t live without” and have them explain why.

After having about 10 students share, I will show students the book Oh, The Things They Invented by Bonnie Worth.

We will do a short book walk.

I will ask questions like:

What do we see on the cover? Throughout the pages?

What do we think this book is about?

I will read the book to the class, while stopping to explain difficult words.

Development:

After we finish reading the book, I will first ask students if they remember what the difference is between an inventor and an innovator.

I will say something like:

Can someone please remind me what the difference is between an innovation and an invention?

Next, I will ask students which inventors stood out to them and why.

I will say something like:

Who were some inventors we read about?

What did they invent?

Which inventor did you like best? Why?

Did something we read surprise you?

After our discussion, the students might be a little restless. If I feel like the time is right, I will give them a short brain break.

Tasks:

I will have students fill out a worksheet about inventors.

Worksheet: Inventors and their Inventions

How to do the worksheet

  1. Students will work individually, though they may discuss their work with a peer sitting next to them.

  2. Students will write their name and the date at the top of the worksheet.

  3. Students will pick ONE inventor discussed in the book.

  4. Students will answers the questions on the worksheet.

  5. If a student needs additional information, the iPads will be available upon request as well as the book read.

Closure:

  • I will ask students to begin thinking about their own potential inventions by showing them a video.

  • Video: Kid President – How to Be an Inventor

  • After the video, I will tell students to write down any potential ideas in their journal.

Assessment:

Students will be evaluated on their participation and ability to fill out the worksheets.

  • Did students pick up on important information?

  • Did students try to answer the questions individually before seeking help?

  • Did students try to sound out words?

  • Are students using full sentences?

Adaptations and Modifications

  • Students on adapted IEPs will be given additional support from teachers and aids.

Personal Development and Assessment

  • Did I have all my materials prepared on time?

  • Did I engage during the introduction and development?

  • Did I ask the appropriate questions and scaffold as needed?

  • Would I change anything if I were to repeat this lesson?
