Cycle Level: 2
As part of an art history unit, we looked at public wall art throughout history. This unit will contain 5 sections.
Unit Rationale
This unit takes students on an exciting trip through history to explore different forms of artistic expression that have been recorded on walls. They will learn to spot subtle details in the works of wall art that reveal features of the daily lives of the people of that time. In doing so, students will develop their ability to look beyond the focal point of an image and delve deeper into ideas of historical context and society that may be represented within the image.
The students will use their experience from the lessons to think critically about what might be the distinguishing characteristics and social realities of their own historical period. They will express their opinions about by working together to create their own wall art that acts as a representation of the realities of their own community: the classroom community. By developing this form of awareness in students, they will be encouraged to think less about themselves as an individual and more about themselves as a part of a community or social group that is leaving a historical footprint.
Stay tuned for individual lessons!
