Starting the School Year
As a new school year begins, it is essential to start on a positive note. To do so, we must promote a healthy learning environment for the students. The physical classroom must be as organized as possible before school begins, and must discuss the emotional environment within the first week of school. It is essential to prepare and plan before the first day and continue throughout the first couple of weeks to establish classroom management and start the school year off right.
Prior to the First Day of School
- Get familiar with school policies and expectations, schedules, and procedures
- Introductions between colleagues
- Speak to your teaching partner
- Set up the physical classroom
- Place all basic equipment
- Label student belongs, cubbies, and bins
- Decorate the classroom in a friendly manner
- Get familiar with student needs and requirements
- Prepare welcome letter to parents
Establishing a Positive Environment:
- Icebreakers
- Watch student interactions for a good seating plan
- Instill "safe space" mentality
- Discuss procedures and rules
- Use positive reinforcement
Get to Know Your Students:
