Cycle Level: 2 (good for cycle 3 as well)

As part of our Dragon's Den unit, we took a look at some famous innovators. In order for my third grade students to relate more to the topic, we focused on Steve Jobs (Apple) and Reed Hastings (Netflix). The students loved every minute of it!

The Lesson

Day One

Introduction: (the “hook”)

  • Have students share an innovation that they “couldn’t live without” and explain why.

  • Read students “Visionary Kids: Steve Jobs”.

Development:

  • Classroom discussion (keep record)

  • What stood out about Steve Jobs?

  • Song – “iTribute”

  • Have students write in their journals notes about Apple and Steve Jobs

  • Discuss concepts in the song.

  • What stood out for them?

Day Two

Introduction: (the “hook”)

  • Ask students what they know about Netflix.

  • Youtube video - Foundation Capital Startup Stories: Netflix

Development:

  • Classroom discussion (keep record)

  • What stood out about Reed Hastings?

Tasks:

  • Worksheet about innovators

  • Write down potential ideas to begin brainstorming

Closure:

  • Discuss the difference between the inventors and innovators we saw.

Tell students about the mini-research project.
