Cycle Level: 1 (Good for all grades though)

For ethics, I read my class "Something Special" by Phoebe Gilman. We spoke about how items hold sentimental value for specific people. As a class, we discussed when this story took place and sequencing as well, but we focused on what "something special" could be. After writing down students' responses on the Smart Board, each student wrote in their journal what their personal something special is while answering the following questions:

  • What is something special to you?

  • Describe the item.

  • Why is it special to you?

  • Who got it for you?

  • What else can you share about the item?

After the student finished writing in their journal, he or she had to edit it for CUPS (capitalization, understanding, punctuation, and sentence structure) and then get it approved by me. Once I have corrected it and the student has reviewed, he or she will get a formal sheet to rewrite the text.
