Here's a brief look into graffiti.

Introduction

Students and teacher will discuss about graffiti. Questions such as:

  • Where have they seen graffiti?

  • What does graffiti mean to them?

  • Is graffiti done on street walls morally correct?

  • What type of messages can we voice by graffiti?

Development

Learning Activities: Students will be asked to sit properly at their desk. The teacher will present her slides showing works of Bansky. Students will be asked to think about the messages Bansky portrays in his artwork and share them to the class.

Activity

Following the discussion, students will be asked to think about something they would like to draw on their stencil sheet. It should portray a message reflecting on current events in the world. They will go get their materials from the set up station that the teacher prepared before class. Once they are ready they can sketch out their drawing on their sketchbook at their desks. After completing that, they can use a plastic sheet as their stencil sheet and with a thin sharpie marker, they can trace out their drawing on the sheet. Once they are done, they will go to the teacher so she can use an x-alto knife to cut out the shapes and images for them to be able to stand out on the final page.

Once everything is cut out, the students will tape their stencil sheet to their sketchbook in order for it not to move and causing the paint to move through the page. Then, they can use spray paint (water paint mixed in with water) in a spray bottle or they can paint in their stencil with the use of sponges and water paint.

Once that is done, they must leave it to dry and then remove the stencil sheet. Following that, they will show their final work to the class and the class will have to guess what is the message that the student portrayed.

Closure Students will show their final work to the class and the class will have to guess what is the message that the student portrayed. Then, the teacher can post the artworks on one of the classroom’s walls creating a wall of “Banksy” inspired graffiti.

Assessment

Teacher will assess the students if they followed the process of the workshop and if their message portrays a current event from the world.
