The Lesson
Introduction:
Stimulus for Creation:
This lesson will be introduced by bringing in a Public Artist who is experience in the Public Art World. A new face will intrigue the students and grab their attention. The students will be presented with images of famous public art that goes back 17,000 years. They will be introduced to cave art, fresco painting, stencil and graffiti art, and contemporary art, which will be explored throughout this unit.
Learning Activities: The student must know what a painting is, what art is, and basic art techniques. They must also be able to share their opinion and be open to critique.
Development:
This class will not be a visual art lesson, instead, it is an introduction and discussion class. After the guest speaker introduces the topic of public wall art, the students will breakup into their groups to discuss the following questions:
Where have you seen public art?
Describe the images you have seen. What do you think they mean?
Do you like or dislike public art?
Do you think all public art is accepted by society? Why or why not?
Closure:
The teacher will bring conversations to an end by flickering lights. The students will take the last 10 minutes of class to share what their group discussed. The groups will go one at a time and they will each have a few minutes to speak. For student who are misunderstandings, the teacher will speak to them one on one to re-explain what they had a hard time with.
Assessment:
To determine whether the student have met the objective of this lesson, during the discussion period, the teacher will walk around and listen to the conversations that are going on.
Is everyone participating?
Is the group focused on the questions given?
Do they understand what public art is?
